Paths to Publication Conference and Retreat
April 18 (One-day Conference); April 18-20 (Novel Writing Retreat)
If you're interested in creating books for children, there are many paths you can take to publication. Our one-day conference and extended novel writing retreat will provide information on many of these paths and support for you on your journey to publication. Both events will be held at the beautiful St. Benedict Retreat Center just outside of Schuyler, Nebraska.
Sunday Conference
April 18, 9:00 AM- 5:00 PM
This one-day conference will address many aspects of creating children's books, including the roles of editors and agents, a writer's journey to publication, research for non-fiction and fiction, and using storyboards for illustration and writing. The conference also includes a first pages critique session; bring one page of your manuscript and receive feedback from writer/editor Jill Santopolo and literary agent Stephen Barbara. (Cost for one-day retreat: $100 for SCBWI members; the cost includes lunch if registering before April 1.)
Novel Writing Retreat
Sunday, April 18 - Tuesday, April 20 (noon)
From Sunday evening through Tuesday, writers who have completed a draft of a novel will work with small groups and with writer/editor Jill Santopolo and literary agent Stephen Barbara to develop their manuscripts and submissions packages. This event, offered in conjunction with Prairieland Press, is an extraordinary opportunity for young adult and middle grade novelists to grow as writers and develop lasting connections. Participants must register by March 1 and provide a novel draft and a submission package. (Cost for the full retreat: $600 for SCBWI members; the cost includes the Sunday conference, a private room Sunday and Monday nights, and meals.)
